Most of us are switching to natural beauty but we must be aware that not everything natural is beneficial.
Over the past few months I have seen many natural and organic beauty lovers developing allergies, or complaining of tingle/irritation on their skin after they apply their new favourite products.
Consumers can react to essential oils and other components but I am surprised the surge of four well documented irritants currently used in skincare:
Sodium phytate: it captures impurities from ingredients so it avoids residues, discoloration or impair the foaming properties of shampoos and other cleansing products. Sodium phytate is the natural equivalent of the synthetic EDTA (that we might read on other labels). Both substances are irritant.
Potassium sorbate: commonly used preservative even accepted within the food industry. No matter how natural its origin it still causes irritation especially around the eyes.
Menthol: The natural version derived from peppermint oil gives a refreshing aroma to haircare and bodycare formulas. Also it can be found in lipcare products. It is certainly a not skin friendly ingredient and it can be highly irritant.
Chamomile: Despite being one of the first choice for sensitive souls for its soothing properties some chamomile extracts can be irritant. I recommend to try before you buy.
